ORLANDO -- Following a tough start to the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship at Grand Cypress Golf Club on Friday, the GW golf team headed into Saturday's second round looking to make some noise and rise up the leaderboard. The Colonials turned in a much-improved effort, shaving nine strokes off their team score as compared to round one, but they remained idle in ninth place at the end of the day.
GW shot a 20-over 308 and was one of six teams in the field of 11 to improve its score on a day that presented similarly difficult scoring conditions as Friday. The field of 55 had a scoring average of 77.96 in round two after Friday saw a 78.94 mark. Davidson took sole possession of first with a 6-over 294 for a two-day total of 594, while Dayton is in second with a 602 (300-302). Rhode Island saw the biggest jump, moving from seventh to third thanks to a 9-over 297 following a 308 in round one.
"We didn't play bad golf, we just made some mistakes that hurt us," said head coach Chuck Scheinost. "With the wind swirling and the pins where they were, it was tough out there."
Davidson's Mike Blasey was the only player in the field in red figures with a 2-under 70, leaving him in first place at even par overall. Brody King of URI is in second at 1-over and another Wildcat, Alex Ross, is in third at 3-over par.
Vince Palazzolo, who came in to the day three shots off the lead, played a mostly steady round but carded a 77 and will go into Sunday tied for 11th and seven shots behind Blasey. Logan Lowe rode the ups and downs of five birdies, five bogeys and a double for GW's low round of the day with a 2-over 74 that moved him up from T-44 to T-27 on the leaderboard.
Christian Cichan and Jack Porcelli are tied for 35th after turning in 78 and 80, respectively, while Adrian Castagnola played his final 15 holes at 1-over par following a rough start to card 79. Cichan's score suffered from a quadruple bogey on the ninth hole but he recovered to shoot 1-over 37 coming in.
"I know our guys are disappointed to not be in contention," said Scheinost. "Hopefully we can go out tomorrow and enjoy the journey that's been this year and remember the good golf and the good times we've had throughout the year. It's one more opportunity to tee it up together, especially with our three seniors, and see if we can't end it on a positive note."
The Colonials will tee off in the final round starting at 8:15 a.m. on Sunday. Live scoring can be followed here.
