CHARLOTTESVILLE - Senior Isaiah Pasteur tied the George Washington baseball program record with a hit in his 24th consecutive game but the Colonials were outlasted, 3-2, in 12 innings in a close game at Virginia on Tuesday night at Davenport Field.
CHARLOTTESVILLE - Senior Isaiah Pasteur tied the George Washington baseball program record with a hit in his 24th consecutive game but the Colonials were outlasted, 3-2, in 12 innings in a close game at Virginia on Tuesday night at Davenport Field.
Key Stats
- Pasteur finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks, one triple, one run and a stolen base to tie Joey Bartosic's program record of 24 consecutive games with a hit. The senior drew walks in his first two plate appearances before leading off the top of the fifth inning with a base hit.
- Senior Kevin Hodgson pitched well in the start on the mound but did not factor into the decision after the game extended to extra innings. Hodgson went five innings and allowed just two earned runs while scattering seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
- GW trailed 2-1 entering the eighth inning but was able to manufacture a run to tie the game.
- The Cavaliers threatened by loading the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning but Pasteur, pitching in relief, thwarted the threat to maintain to tie.
- The Colonials got the go-ahead run to second base in the 10th but were turned away. Virginia also threatened late, with two men on in the bottom of the 11th, but the Colonials escaped the jam to extend the game.
- Freshman Colin Brophy (2-for-5) joined Pasteur with multiple hits.
Scoring - Top 3: Senior Matt Cosentino and Pasteur both walked in the inning before sophomore Steven Barmakian reached on a fielder's choice. During the play, a throwing error allowed Cosentino to score the first run of the game (GW 1, Virginia 0).
- Bottom 3: Virginia tied the score on a RBI single (GW 1, Virginia 1).
- Bottom 5: With runners on first and second, a two-out RBI single put the Cavaliers ahead (Virginia 2, GW 1).
- Top 8: Pasteur led off the eighth with a triple to right field and then trotted home on a RBI single by senior Robbie Metz (GW 2, Virginia 2).
- Bottom 12: A leadoff double started the inning and, after a groundout, the winning run came around on a RBI double to clinch the game for Virginia (Virginia 3, GW 2).
