The Colonials beat Fordham before falling to Wagner
WASHINGTON – George Washington men's water polo split a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference doubleheader at Charles E. Smith Center Pool on Sunday.
After taking down Fordham, 15-13, in the opener, the Colonials came up short against Wagner, 18-16, to close the day in their home pool.
Andrew Mavis totaled eight goals and Nick Schroeder netted six on the day to pace GW, which sits at 17-6 and 7-3 in MAWPC play heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
GW 15, Fordham 13: The Colonials held off the Rams in the opener behind three goals apiece from Mavis, Schroeder, Andras Levai and Jack Kerwin.
GW trailed after one quarter before surging ahead with five straight goals. Kerwin's goal on the opening possession of the second period tied the game at 2, and the Colonials converted on their next four offensive trips, as well, to lead 6-2 on a goal by Finn Lillis with 4:56 remaining in the half.
GW stayed in front the rest of the way, despite a strong challenge from Fordham (14-14, 6-6). The Rams edged within one goal three times in third quarter only to be answered each time by Levai, who scored all three of his goals in the stanza.
Back-to-back goals from Mavis and Schroeder to open the fourth gave GW some breathing room. Up 14-12 in the closing minutes, the Colonials dug in with several defensive stops to prevent the visitors from getting any closer. That was the score when Mavis put the game out of reach, scoring the Buff and Blue's final goal with 14 seconds left.
Schroeder tied a career high with his three goals and also added an assist. Atakan Destici posted two goals, two assists and two ejections drawn in the victory.
Austin Pyrch made 13 saves for GW to earn the win in net, boosted by a defense that recorded eight field blocks. Mavis and DJ Davis each tallied a pair.
Wagner 18, GW 16: Mavis scored five more goals and Schroeder matched his career high again with three scores, but the Colonials fell to the Seahawks in a rematch of last season's MAWPC final.
After a back-and-forth opening half, Wagner found separation with a six-goal third quarter.
GW trailed by as many as four goals early in the fourth quarter before battling back. The Colonials pulled within 17-16 on Schroeder's goal with 3:34 to go.
That turned out to be the home team's final score, though. Teo Dadic quickly answered to push Wagner's lead back to two goals, and the Seahawks (16-13, 8-4) managed to hold on for the road victory.
Destici tallied three goals and three assists, while Kerwin added two goals and three helpers. Andras Levai recorded three points (two goals, one assist) to reach 100 for the season, and Zach Slaughter also found the net against Wagner.
Matt Taylor recorded 13 saves in net for GW, which is now 6-1 in Foggy Bottom this season.
UP NEXT: GW is back at Smith Center Pool next Saturday morning, hosting Johns Hopkins at 10 a.m. to close its home schedule. Senior Day festivities are slated to begin at 9:45 a.m. The Colonials wrap the regular season later that day with an 8 p.m. start at Navy.
