Colonials took down Johns Hopkins on Senior Day
WASHINGTON – Austin Pyrch celebrated Senior Day in style with a career-high 17 saves, helping George Washington men's water polo lock down Johns Hopkins in a 15-7 victory on Saturday at Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
The Colonials finished out the sweep of a split doubleheader with a 17-8 victory at Navy later in the day to clinch the No. 2 spot in the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference standings (9-3). At 19-6 overall, they've totaled their most wins since earning a program-record 23 victories during the 1997 season.
Andras Levai put together an incredible doubleheader on both ends. In the opener, the sophomore from Hungary piled up four goals and five assists to equal his career high with nine points. He also tallied eight steals, a career best and one off the program record.
Levai added three goals, four assists and three steals in the nightcap.
GW 15, Johns Hopkins 7: After honoring seniors Pyrch, Brett Else, Jack Kerwin and Zach Slaughter, GW produced a sterling defensive effort to finish a regular season sweep of the Blue Jays.
GW went ahead on Atakan Destici's goal two minutes in and led the rest of the way. When Johns Hopkins pulled within 3-2 late in the first quarter, GW responded with four straight goals to assert control. Levai and Andrew Mavis both scored twice in the run.
The Colonials never let the Blue Jays (7-17, 2-10) get closer than four goals again, closing out the comfortable victory with a five-goal fourth period.
Pyrch went the distance in net in his final home game, adding a pair of steals to his career-high save total. The veteran netminder moved into sixth-place on GW's all-time saves list and finished the day with 525 stops for his career. He had help against Johns Hopkins from a defense that recorded 17 steals and six field blocks.
Offensively, Levai led the way with his nine points to match his total from last season's MAWPC Championship semifinal against Fordham.
Mavis, Destici and Jordan Blosser scored three goals apiece, and first-years Nick Schroeder and Josh Yardley also found the net in the victory.
GW 17, Navy 8: After a tightly contested start, the Colonials pulled away from the Midshipmen at Scott Natatorium to finish the sweep.
Jack Kerwin's goal with 3:14 left in the second quarter broke a 4-4 tie and triggered GW's decisive run. The Colonials scored eight straight goals, extending the lead to 12-4 on a goal by Henry Maas with 3:36 left in the third quarter. The scores came from seven different individuals.
Ten Colonials scored in all, paced by three goals apiece from Maas, Levai and Kerwin. DJ Davis scored twice, while Heath Faulkner and Josh Yardley both posted a goal and two assists.
Pyrch (8 saves) and Matt Taylor (13 saves) split time in net for the Colonials against Navy (14-12, 6-6). Finn Lillis came up with a career-high four steals in the victory.
UP NEXT: GW tries to defend its title at the MAWPC Championship, which runs next Friday through Sunday at Fordham's Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center in Bronx, N.Y.
