Colonials face Fordham and Wagner on Sunday at Smith Center Pool
After taking a break last weekend, George Washington men's water polo returns to its home pool Sunday with a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference doubleheader.
The Colonials host Fordham at 10 a.m. before welcoming Wagner to Charles E. Smith Center Pool at 3 p.m. in a rematch of last season's MAWPC final.
LAST TIME OUT: GW (16-5, 6-2 MAWPC) enters the doubleheader having won three straight games and seven of its past eight. The Colonials downed Navy, 14-8, in their last contest on Oct. 19 behind three goals apiece from Andrew Mavis, Atakan Destici and Andras Levai.
RIGHT AT HOME: GW is 5-0 in Foggy Bottom this season with an average margin of victory of 12.2 goals per game. The Colonials have scored at least 20 goals in four of their five games at Smith Center Pool, including a 20-9 rout of MAWPC-leading Bucknell on Sept. 29.
AWESOME ATAKAN: A two-time MAWPC First Team pick, Destici leads GW in goals (64), assists (46) and points (110). The junior from Turkey recorded his 200th career goal in a win over Connecticut College on Oct. 14. He currently ranks third in program history in assists (168) and points (372) and eighth in goals (204).
SCOUTING FORDHAM: The Rams (12-13, 4-5) have won six of their past seven games, most recently beating La Salle, 15-7, on Sunday. They are set to start their road trip by facing Johns Hopkins and Navy on Saturday.
GW claimed a 14-7 win over Fordham on Sept. 23 behind five goals from Destici.
SCOUTING WAGNER: The Seahawks (14-12, 6-3) have won four straight games following a five-game losing streak. With three regular season games remaining, they currently sit third in the MAWPC standings behind Bucknell and GW.
The Colonials claimed a 15-14 season-opening victory over Wagner on Sept. 1 at the Navy Open before the Seahawks won in their home pool, 14-11, on Sept. 22. The Buff and Blue took all three meetings in 2017, highlighted by an 8-5 victory at the MAWPC Championship to secure the conference title and an NCAA Tournament berth.
COMING UP: GW celebrates Senior Day on Nov. 10, hosting Johns Hopkins at 10 a.m. The Colonials close the regular season later that day with an 8 p.m. start at Navy. The MAWPC Championship runs Nov. 16-18 at Fordham.
