SAINT LOUIS - The third consecutive postseason appearance for the George Washington baseball team's senior class came to an end in an 8-4 loss to Rhode Island on Thursday night in an Atlantic 10 Championship elimination game at Billiken Sports Center.

GW concludes the season with 31 victories, the second time in three seasons the team has eclipsed the 30-win mark. It also stands as the 10th-highest win total in program history.

Wednesday's win over Saint Louis is the first time since 2003 that the Colonials have won their opening postseason game, a span of 14 seasons.

The 14-member senior class has led the resurgence of the program with this season marking the third-consecutive postseason appearance. The group has also accounted for 117 wins over the last four years with multiple All-Conference, regional and national award recipients.

Rhode Island built an early lead with single runs in the first and third innings before striking for a trio of runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 5-0.

GW scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth when junior Robbie Metz tripled off the left field wall and scored on a groundout.

The Rams rebounded in the top of the sixth with a run to push the lead back to 6-1, but the Colonials would not go quietly as freshman Nate Fassnacht's RBI single in the bottom half pulled GW back with four runs at 6-2.

The Rams scored their final two runs in the top of the seventh, but a late rally by the Colonials - RBI singles by seniors Joey Bartosic and Andrew Selby - fell short.
