RICHMOND, Va. - The George Washington baseball team scored in the top of the first inning and never looked back on the way to a decisive, series-clinching 10-4 victory over Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field.
Seniors Bobby Campbell and Joey Bartosic both tallied three hits on the day with Campbell connecting on his team-leading fifth home run of the season. Six of GW's starting nine drove in a run while a three-man effort on the mound made it complete team win.
Bartosic wasted little time in getting his day started, leading of the game with a double down the left-field line before scoring on a double by senior Cody Bryant which put the Colonials on top, 1-0, in the first.
Bartosic was at it again in the top of the third, leading off with a base hit and moving to second on a walk before scoring on Campbell's RBI single. Later in the inning, freshman Nate Fassnacht drove a two-run double to the gap in left-center field to give the Colonials a 4-0 lead.
Richmond got one back in the bottom of the third but a RBI groundout by Bartosic in the top of the fourth pushed the advantage back to four runs at 5-1.
Campbell broke the game open in the top of the fifth with Bryant on first after a leadoff single, when he sent a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left field for a two-run home run, putting GW out front, 7-1. The homer was the 10th of his career.
Richmond got single runs in each of the next two innings to make the score 7-3, but the Colonials responded in their final two at-bats. In the eighth, senior Andrew Selby provided a RBI single while a fielding error in the outfield allowed another run to come in to make the score 9-3.
Richmond drove its final run in on a double play in the bottom of the eighth before senior Eli Kashi's RBI single in the top of the ninth finished the scoring.
Freshman Elliott Raimo earned his third win of the season on the mound, holding Richmond to three runs on seven hits across 6.2 innings. He walked just one while registering four strikeouts.
Senior Eddie Muhl took the ball for the final 2.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits to secure the win
Bartosic finished 3-for-5 on the day with two runs, one double and one RBI while Campbell was 3-for-5 with one double, one home run and three RBIs from the cleanup spot.
Bryant also had a big day, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and one RBI. Fassnacht (1 2B, 2 RBI) and junior Robbie Metz (2 H, 2 R, 1 2B 1 RBI) also contributed to the win.
The Colonials return home to host UMBC on Tuesday (3 p.m.) before hitting the road next weekend for a non-conference series at Villanova.
