Baseball Takes Opener Over Richmond, 4-2

RICHMOND, Va. - Three-hit days from senior Bobby Campbell and junior Brandon Chapman, along with a strong pitching performance from starter Brady Renner and senior closer Eddie Muhl, paved the way to a 4-2 win for the George Washington baseball team over Richmond in Friday's series opener at Pitt Field.
Renner earned his fourth win of the season with another strong appearance on the mound. He limited the Spiders to just two runs over seven innings while scattering five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Muhl took the ball for the final two innings and earned his fourth save of the season with a pair of scoreless frames.
GW (14-16, 3-4 A-10) got on the board in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by Campbell. He drove in classmate Andrew Selby who worked a one-out walk and moved into scoring position on a failed pickoff attempt.
Renner's lone blemish came in the bottom half of the first as Richmond (11-17, 2-2 A-10) plated its only runs of the day on a RBI single and run-scoring groundout to pull ahead 2-1.
The Colonials scored on a throwing error in the top of the third to tie the score at 2-2 before plating the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth on a RBI double by freshman Nate Fassnacht.
Campbell connected on another RBI single in the top of the eighth for an insurance run, which put the Colonials ahead, 4-2.
Muhl allowed just two hits over his two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save, running his program-record total to 33. Richmond got the leadoff man on base in the bottom of the ninth but Muhl induced a momentum-killing double play to erase the threat before striking out the final batter of the game.
Campbell finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, one run and one stolen base while Chapman was 3-for-4.
The Colonials and Spiders meet again on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
