Baseball Rallies Past Davidson to Clinch Series

ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team strung together five consecutive two-out hits to erase a two-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning, battling back to stun Davidson, 4-3, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field.
The win clinches the series for the Colonials, who won the second and third games after falling in Friday's opener. GW improves to 23-22 overall on the season and 7-8 in the Atlantic 10 with the series win.
GW fell behind early after Davidson scored three runs in the top of the first inning but a dominant bullpen performance by sophomore Will Kobos and senior Eddie Muhl kept the Colonials within striking distance throughout the game.
Kobos allowed just two hits and three walks across five scoreless innings of work before handing the ball off to Muhl. The senior closer earned the win with 3.1 innings of shutout relief down the stretch.
GW cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth when senior Bobby Campbell hit a one-out double and scored on a RBI single by freshman Nate Fassnacht, making the score 3-1.
Kobos pitched a hitless top half of the fifth and then got the first two outs of the sixth before handing the ball off to Muhl, who retired the side on a groundout.
Muhl got a big double-play ball to end the seventh and worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth ahead of GW's big rally.
Campbell started the sequence in the eighth with a two-out single and moved up to second on a base hit by Fassnacht. Junior Robbie Metz then came to the plate and lined the first pitch he saw up the middle to score Campbell and cut the deficit to one.
Junior Brandon Chapman was next up and smacked the first pitch he saw to left field to drive in Fassnacht and tie the score at 3-3. Junior Mark Osis followed suit with a first-pitch RBI single to right field to send Metz home and give the Colonials the go-ahead score.
Muhl got a pair of groundouts to open the ninth before clinching the game on a popup which he calmly fielded to end the game.
Metz had a big day at the plate after faltering in his starting pitching role. He allowed three runs without getting out of the first inning but made up for it at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a big RBI single and scoring the winning run.
Campbell, Fassnacht, Chapman and Osis all finished with two hits apiece while senior Andrew Selby rounded out a strong team performance at the plate by going 2-for-3.
GW visits Georgetown on Tuesday night (7 p.m.) before visiting Revolutionary Rival George Mason next weekend for another critical three-game conference series.
