Baseball Closes Strong in 12-4 Win at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. - Senior Bobby Campbell connected on his team-leading seventh home run of the season and freshman Nate Fassnacht hit his first career long ball as the George Washington baseball team rolled to a 12-4 win over Delaware State on Wednesday afternoon at Soldier Field.
GW (21-21) wasted little time in establishing a lead as a RBI double by senior Cody Bryant and a RBI single by Fassnacht in the top of the first built an early 2-0 lead for freshman starter Emmett Harkins.
Harkins did not allow a baserunner over his first three innings of work before Delaware State loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth. Harkins exited the game and the Hornets were able to tie the score at 2-2 to send the game to the fifth inning.
The Colonials took the lead for good with five runs on five hits and an error in the top half of the sixth. Campebell's solo shot started the scoring to break the tie and put GW on top, 3-2. RBI singles by junior Brandon Chapman and Mark Osis extended the lead to 5-2 and then senior Eli Kashi drove in two runs on an error to push the advantage to 7-2.
Campbell provided another RBI single in the top of the seventh to make the score 8-2 before Fassnacht launched an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left for a three-run home run, giving the Colonials an 11-2 lead.
Bryant drove another run in during the top of the eighth inning for the final tally.
Delaware State could only muster two runs against a solid bullpen effort from the Colonials. Jaret Edwards (3.1 IP, 0 ER, 3 K), freshman Billy Grant (1.0 IP, 2 ER) and Andrew Wheeler (1 IP, 1 K) closed out the game to clinch the win for the Colonials.
Fassnacht's first career four-RBI game paced the offense while Campbell (3 H, HR, 2 RBI), Bryant (3 H, 2 RBI) and Kashi (1 H, 2 RBI) accounted for multiple runs.
GW hosts Davidson in a three-game Atlantic 10 series at Tucker Field this weekend. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
