RICHMOND, Va. - A seven-run sixth inning cost the George Washington baseball team in the series finale at VCU on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond as the Colonials fell, 10-2.
GW had cut a 3-0 deficit to one run with a sacrifice fly by Joey Bartosic and a RBI single by Mark Osis in the top half of the sixth inning.
VCU took advantage of a two-error sequence that got the leadoff man in the bottom of the sixth to second base. The fielding miscues opened the door to seven unearned runs coming across as the Rams turned a 3-2 lead into a 10-2 advantage.
Junior Tyler Swiggart was able to end VCU's scoring with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen but GW was could not mount a rally in the last three innings.
The Colonials return home to host UMES on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
