Baseball Fights Tough in 7-1 Loss to Virginia

ARLINGTON, Va. - Senior Joey Bartosic extended his current hit streak to 11 games with a trio of base knocks on Wednesday as the George Washington baseball team fought hard in a 7-1 loss to No. 8 Virginia on Tuesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
The Colonials played the Cavaliers tough in the contest, limiting the second-best run-scoring team in the nation to three runs below its season average in the 7-1 defeat. GW was within three runs of the lead for over seven innings before Virginia tacked on a trio of runs in the final two innings.
GW pitchers combined to strand 13 runners on base throughout the contest, but the same problem plagued the Colonials as the bats left 11 men on.
Pavan Smith put Virginia (12-1) up in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run. GW threatened in the bottom half of the inning, getting runners on the corners with two outs, but was unable to crack the scoreboard.
A RBI single by Cameron Simmons extended Virginia's lead to 3-0 in the top of the third before the Colonials got on the board in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single from junior Mark Osis.
The Cavaliers scored another run in the top of the fourth before freshman Jaret Edwards entered in relief and pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
UVA found the scoreboard again in the top of the eighth when an error in the outfield allowed a one-out double to score. The Cavaliers tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth for insurance.
Bartosic finished 3-for-5 at the top of the order while senior Bobby Campbell went 2-for-3 with one walk.
GW will play its first home weekend series of the season this weekend when it welcomes NJIT to Tucker Field for a three-game set. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
