Baseball Falls to UMass in Rubber Match

ARLINGTON, Va. - Massachusetts broke a 2-2 tie with eight runs over the final three innings as the George Washington baseball team fell in the rubber match, 10-4, on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field.
Freshman Nate Fassnacht's bloop RBI single gave GW a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning and it appeared to be all that freshman starter Elliott Raimo might need on the day
Raimo retired the first 15 batters he faced, carrying a perfect game into the sixth inning, before allowing a leadoff, bunt single that spoiled the bid. Massachusetts would go on to plate two runs on one hit, three walks and a hit batter in the sixth.
Raimo exited the game after striking out six with just one hit and one walk across 5.1 innings of work.
Junior Robbie Metz tied the game at 2-2 when he connected on a RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, but Massachusetts broke the tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead.
Senior Andrew Selby cut into the deficit with a leadoff home run to open the bottom half of the seventh, but after a scoreless eighth inning, Massachusetts put the game away by scoring six runs on four hits, three walks and two errors to take a 10-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
A RBI single by Brandon Chapman was all the Colonials could muster in their last at bat to make the final score 10-4 in favor of the visiting Minutemen.
Senior Bobby Campbell picked up his team-leading 11th multiple-hit game of the season by going 4-for-4 with one double and one walk.
GW hosts Towson on Tuesday afternoon to conclude its homestand. First pitch at Tucker Field is 3:00 p.m.
