BALTIMORE Senior Bobby Campbell broke a 3-3 tie with a leadoff, solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to send the GW baseball team to their third straight win in a 4-3 triumph over UMBC on Tuesday night at Alumni Field.

GW improves to 9-11 with the win and has now won three in a row and six of its last seven games.

The Colonials were on the board first in the top of the second inning when junior Brandon Chapman hit his third home run of the season, sending a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left field, to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.

UMBC answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead before GW pulled even in the top of the third. A leadoff double by junior Mark Osis put the Colonials in business. He was sacrificed over to third base by senior Eli Kashi before senior Joey Bartosic came through with a RBI single to knot the score at 2-2.

GW regained the lead in the top of the fourth when freshman Nate Fassnachet hit a two-out double and scored on a RBI single by junior Robbie Metz.

UMBC answered to tie the score, 3-3, with a run in the top of the fifth but that would be all the Retrievers could muster against a staunch bullpen effort from the Colonials.

The trio of Kevin Hodgson (1.1 innings), sophomore Will Kobos (2.2 innings) and senior Eddie Muhl (1.0 innings) combined to yield just two hits across the final five innings of the game. Kobos was especially sharp, striking out five batters without a base hit or a walk.

Campbell led off the ninth inning by sending the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field for his third home run of the season.

Muhl allowed a base hit to open the ninth but retired the side without harm for his second save of the season.

Bartosic was 2-for-4 with a double from the leadoff spot to lead four Colonial players with multiple hits. Campbell (2-for-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI), Fassnacht (2-for-4, 1 2B) and Osis (2-for-4, 1 R) also registered multi-hit efforts.

GW returns home to open its Atlantic 10 schedule with a three-game series against Massachusetts this weekend at Tucker Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 3:00 p.m.
