ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 10-2 win over Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field.
GW (10-11, 1-0 A-10) plated all 10 runs in the first six innings and received another strong pitching performance from junior Brady Renner en route to the team's fourth win in a row and seventh victory in its last eight outings.
The Colonials got right to work in the bottom of the first with consecutive singles to open the inning by seniors Joey Bartosic and Andrew Selby. A double steal moved each runner up 90 feet and senior Cody Bryant cashed in with a two-run single up the middle to put GW on top, 2-0.
GW added three more runs in the first inning, thanks to a trio of errors by Massachusetts (4-9, 0-1 A-10) and a RBI single from junior Mark Osis, to pull ahead 5-0.
The momentum continued into the second inning as Bartosic led off again with a base hit, clinching his fifth consecutive multiple-hit game. Selby then came up and blasted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right field for a two-run home run, his second of the season, to extend the lead to 7-0.
Renner was on point on the mound once again as he retired the side in order in the third before yielding just single base hits in each of the next three innings.
Freshman Nate Fassnacht made the score 8-0 with a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. The Colonials then loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and had two additional runs come across on consecutive balks to push the lead to 10-0.
Renner ran into trouble in the seventh, giving up a RBI single, but stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout looking to end the threat.
The Minutemen got one back in the eighth inning but the deficit was too large as the bullpen duo of John Greeley and Tyler Swiggart clinched the win.
Selby led GW at the plate by going 3-for-5 with one home run, two runs and two RBIs. Bartosic (2-for-4, 3 R, 1 BB), senior Bobby Campbell (2-for-4, 1 R), Osis (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) and Fassnacht (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) also contributed multiple hits to GW's team total of 12 base knocks.
GW also swiped five bases on the day as Bartosic, Selby, Osis, Fassnacht and junior Robbie Metz all successfully pilfered a sack.
Renner earned the win after allowing one run on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts across seven solid innings.
GW and Massachusetts will play game two on Saturday afternoon. First pitch at The Tuck is set for 1:00 p.m.
