ARLINGTON, Va. - Starting pitcher Will Kobos struck out a career-high eight batters, the GW offense racked up 14 hits and the Colonials took a 9-6 win over Delaware State in the 2017 home opener at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park on Wednesday afternoon.
First baseman Bobby Campbell and shortstop Nate Fassnacht led the way with three-hit days, with Campbell driving in a trio of runs, while Kobos dealt in his first career start. The sophomore right-hander allowed just three hits and two runs, one of them earned, coming on a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
GW seized control in the second inning, when Kobos struck out the side in the top half and the offense responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom half. Designated hitter Colin Gibbons-Fly drove in two with a double to center field and right fielder Matt Cosentino followed with a RBI single two batters later to extend the lead.
Delaware State got on the board in the fourth when Austin Bentley drove a 3-1 offering from Kobos over the wall in left field with a runner on, cutting the GW lead to 3-2.
The Colonials, though, wasted no time getting those runs back and then some, plating four in the bottom half of the inning as Campbell and second baseman Robbie Metz delivered RBI singles before a Cody Bryant sacrifice fly and passed ball scored two more, making it 7-2.
Kobos turned it over to the bullpen after five and the Hornets were able to apply some pressure, pulling within 7-5 in the seventh on three runs and three hits. Freshman righty Jaret Edwards came on in a tough spot, with the bases loaded and two outs, and got a key strikeout to escape the threat and preserve the lead.
The Hornets turned a leadoff single into another run in the eighth, but the GW bats came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Campbell came through with a two-out, two-run single to give the Colonials some cushion.
Edwards stayed on the hill in the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 inning for the first save of his career.
GW, which improved to 2-3 with the victory, returns to the road this weekend with a three-game set at Florida A&M.
