GW Baseball Falls in Opener, 7-2, at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. - The George Washington baseball team fell behind 3-0 before rallying to pull within one run of the lead, but Fordham scored insurance runs down the stretch en route to a 7-2 win over the Colonials on Friday afternoon at Houlihan Park.
Fordham (24-23, 10-6 A-10) used a leadoff home run and RBI single to build a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before tacking on a RBI single in the third inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
GW (20-26, 9-7 A-10) threatened in the top half of the fourth by loading the bases with one out, but Fordham escaped the jam with a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
The Colonials broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth when junior Bobby Campbell's two-run single with two outs pulled the Colonials within one run of the lead at 3-2.
Fordham retaliated immediately in the bottom half of the fifth, using another leadoff home run in addition to a two-run double, to extend the lead to 6-2. Another RBI double in the eighth extended the lead to the final tally of 7-2.
Senior Bobby LeWarne took the loss for the Colonials after allowing six runs on 12 hits with two walks and one strikeout in 4.1 innings.
Greg Weissert earned the win after limiting the Colonials to two runs on three hits with five walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work. Reiss Knehr earned a four-inning save to close the game.
Bartosic finished 3-for-4 at the plate for his team-best 21st multiple-hit game of the season.
GW and Fordham will play the middle game of the three-game set on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
