NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Three members of the George Washington women's tennis squad have earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors, the league announced on Tuesday.
Sophomore Teodora Radosavljevic landed on the All-Conference First Team for the second-straight year, while rookie Sara Grubac snagged Second Team honors and sophomore Marie-Louise Decamps earned a spot on the All-Academic Team for the first postseason award of her career.
In 2016, the Colonials reached the semifinal round of A-10 Championship play for the second time in the last three seasons after staging an upset of second-seeded Massachusetts in the quarterfinal.
Radosavljevic led the Colonials in singles triumphs for the second-straight year, posting an overall 19-12 mark and competing at the top solo spot in dual match play. The sophomore was a critical part of GW's A-10 Championship run, overcoming a 5-1 deficit in the third set against her UMass opponent to claim a crucial singles victory. In February, the Belgrade, Serbia, product earned her first ITA national ranking as the nation's No. 111 singles player.
"It's great to see Teodora make First Team again," said interim head coach Torrie Browning. "She is truly one of the best players in the conference. She is a fierce competitor and she held down the No. 1 spot extremely well for the second year in a row. I am really proud of her for achieving this honor for the second time. She is a hard worker and it really paid off."
Grubac made an immediate impact for the Colonials after joining the squad in the spring semester. The freshman matched Radosavljevic with a team-high 11 spring singles wins, playing primarily at the No. 2 position. The Belgrade, Serbia, native came up clutch in postseason play, tallying a perfect 3-0 mark in her first A-10 Championship performance, including a three-set triumph in GW's win over UMass in the quarterfinal.
"Coming in January is never easy, and I am proud of the way Sara battled through this spring season," said Browning. "As a freshman, it is great to see her make an All-Conference Team after being thrown right into dual matches just three weeks after arriving into a totally new environment."
Decamps posted a stellar sophomore campaign both on the court and in the classroom to earn a spot on the All-Academic Team. The Sao Paulo, Brazil, native ranked second on the team with a 16-9 overall singles record this year, including a 10-4 dual match mark playing at the Nos. 2-5 spots. Decamps excelled against conference foes, posting a 5-1 record. In the classroom, the mathematics and economics double major owns a 3.97 GPA and earned the prestigious Outstanding Academic Achievement Award as a sophomore. Decamps has landed on both the GW Athletics Academic Dean's List and A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in each eligible semester of her career.
"Marie is the true definition of a student-athlete," said Browning. "Her work ethic is impeccable on and off the court. She had an unfortunate injury this season when she was playing some of her best tennis and missed some key matches - I believe if she did not get injured she would have also been named to an All-Conference Team after her level of play this season."
