WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team has clinched its second consecutive appearance, and third in the last five years, to the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship. The Colonials will enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed and will open play against No. 2 VCU on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Fordham's Houlihan Park in Bronx, New York.
Also making the field are No. 1 seed Rhode Island (18-6), No. 3 Saint Joseph's (15-9), No. 4 Saint Louis (15-9), No. 5 Fordham (14-10) and No. 6 Davidson (11-11). The full tournament schedule is available at Atlantic 10 Championship Central.
The winner of the GW-VCU game will advance to play the winner of Saint Joseph's-Davidson on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. The two lowest-seeded losers from the first three games on Wednesday will play in an elimination game on Wednesday evening at 8:30 p.m.
GW and VCU played in a closely-contested three-game series in late April at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. Two of the three games went to extra innings, but the Rams won the series two games to one. The teams were even in runs scored, 14-14, in the series.
The Atlantic 10 Championship is a seven-team, double-elimination tournament with the winner receiving the leagues' automatic big to the NCAA Tournament.
GW is seeking its fifth Atlantic 10 Championship after winning league titles in 1979, 1989, 1992 and 2002.
Last season, GW went 2-2 at the A-10 Championship at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park, finishing with multiple postseason wins for the first time since 2006. The Colonials advanced to the final four of the bracket before being eliminated.
