WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team erased a 4-2 deficit with six runs in the final two innings to down Richmond, 8-4, and clinched the series sweep in a wild Senior Day victory on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (23-28, 12-9 A-10) won each of the three games of the series by rallying from behind and will now try to secure a spot in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship in the final weekend of the regular season.
Senior Luke Olson was the winning pitcher after providing four innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen. He scattered three hits with three walks and four strikeouts to earn his second victory of the year.
For the first time all series, the Colonials scored first when Kevin Mahala singled home Robbie Metz in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead.
Richmond responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning and then added an RBI groundout in the third to pull ahead, 2-1.
GW responded to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom half of the fifth when junior Joey Bartosic led off with a double to the left field corner and then scored on an RBI single by sophomore Mark Osis.
The Spiders got a leadoff home run from Jansen Fraser to regain the lead in the top of the sixth. Later in the inning, Kyle Adams added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-2.
Back-to-back doubles by junior Eli Kashi and Bartosic pulled the Colonials within one run of the lead at 4-3 before the team exploded for five runs in the decisive eighth inning.
The rally started when junior Bobby Campbell led off with a walk and safely got to second base on a throwing error during a fielder's choice. Junior Cody Bryant was up next and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners up to second and third with one out. Junior Andrew Selby then tied the score with an RBI single.
The rally continued when sophomore Brandon Chapman walked to load the bases. After a strikeout
Bartosic came to the plate and roped a 1-0 pitch through the left side of the infield to score both Selby and Mahala and give the Colonials a 6-4 lead. Metz then came to the plate and singled to load the bases again. GW added two more runs on a bases-loaded walk by Osis and an infield RBI single by Campbell.
Olson then retired the side in the ninth inning, punching out two of three batters to clinch the win.
Bartosic finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and three RBIs. It marked his team-leading 24th multiple-hit game of the season, including the eighth time he has recorded three hits or better.
Metz was 3-for-5 with one run and Campbell finished 2-for-4 with one run, one walk and one RBI.
As a team, GW struck out just twice on the afternoon. The pitching staff combined to strand 11 Richmond runners on base to run the three-game total to 39.
GW will conclude the regular season with a three-game series at Saint Louis next week. First pitch on Friday evening is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
