WASHINGTON - Senior Bobby LeWarne allowed a trio of early runs before dominating VCU for the remainder of the game, but the George Washington baseball team was unable to rally late in a 3-0 loss in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
LeWarne took the tough, complete-game loss after allowing three runs on five hits across nine innings of work. He walked two and struck out a career-high nine batters.
VCU (29-14, 11-5 A-10) scored all three of its runs in the first two innings before seeing its bats fall silent against LeWarne. The Rams used a sacrifice fly in the first for a 1-0 lead before extending the advantage to 3-0 with a two-run double in the top of the second.
LeWarne settled into a groove after the second inning and did not allow a hit for the remainder of the game. After hitting a batter in the fourth and issuing a walk in the fifth, the senior ace retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the ninth.
VCU got a standout pitching performance from Michael Dailey, who carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning before junior Joey Bartosic reached on an infield single with two outs. Dailey then turned the ball over to national saves leader Sam Donko, who got the final out of the game for his 16th save of the season.
Dailey earned the win after allowing just one hit in 8.2 shutout innings with one walk and two strikeouts.
Due to anticipated inclement weather, Sunday's game three has been cancelled and the two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
