WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis team will serve as the No. 7 seed at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship, held from April 21-24 at the outdoor Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
The Colonials open Championship play on Thursday with a 3:00 p.m. first round match against 10th-seeded George Mason (7-16, 2-6 A-10).
Three-time defending champion VCU earned the top seed, followed by Massachusetts (2nd), Davidson (3rd), Saint Louis (4th), Richmond (5th) and Duquesne (6th). Fordham (8th), Dayton (9th), George Mason (10th), Saint Joseph's (11th), St. Bonaventure (12th), Rhode Island (13th) and La Salle (14th) round out the 14 team field.
The top two seeds receive a bye into the quarterfinal round, while the remaining 12 squads play first round action on Thursday beginning at 9 a.m.
The seventh-seeded Colonials (6-13, 2-4, A-10) have played a strong schedule this spring, taking on three ranked squads during the regular season. The Buff and Blue have battled injury and competed this semester without freshman Diana Kussainova, who entered 2016 with a No. 114 singles ranking.
Sophomore Teodora Radosavljevic, who entered the spring with a No. 18 Atlantic Region singles ranking, has competed at the top spot for the Colonials for the second-straight season and earned a No. 111 solo rank on Feb. 10. Radosavljevic owns a 9-9 mark in dual match play and is tied with classmate Marie-Louise Decamps (9-3) for a team-high in wins.
Decamps has recently returned to the lineup after recovering from injury and has posted a strong sophomore year for GW, tallying a perfect 4-0 mark against league opponents in singles play.
Junior Taylor Nederlander has also excelled against A-10 foes, posting a 4-2 mark in league play.
Mason's Esu Erdenabat's 11 singles wins in dual match play mark a team high, while Erdenabat owns an 11-11 record playing at the Nos. 3-6 positions. Olivia Lacy-Thompson's 9-8 solo mark is the only winning record for the Patriots this spring.
In doubles play, Morgan Yang and Nicole Haigwood have paired for a 7-2 dual match record for Mason with experience at each step of the ladder, but primarily playing at the No. 3 position.
The blanked George Mason, 7-0, on Saturday in a Revolutionary Rivalry match. A year ago, GW downed Mason, 4-1, in first round action at the A-10 Championship before falling to eventual champion VCU in quarterfinal play.
