CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Bobby Campbell went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the George Washington baseball team to a 10-5 win in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader over Charleston Southern at CSU Ballpark.
Charleston Southern (9-10) prevailed, 3-1, in the first game of the day before Campbell's heroics led the Colonials to the victory in the nightcap.
GW's (8-11) bullpen provided six innings of one-run relief as the Colonials bounced back in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Buccaneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Campbell's second home run of the season, a solo shot with one out in the top of the second, cut the deficit in half. Next up was sophomore Brandon Chapman, who was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a single by junior Andrew Selby and scored on a RBI groundout by sophomore Matt Cosentino.
Charleston Southern pulled ahead with two runs on one hit in the bottom of the fourth inning, chasing GW starter Shane Sweeney from the game after a leadoff single, error and a walk put runners on second and third with two outs. Sweeney yielded four runs on five hits with two walks in three innings of work. Sophomore Tyler Swiggart allowed two of Sweeney's runs to score, making the score 4-2, before retiring the side.
The Colonials responded in a big way, plating four runs on five hits in the top half of the fifth to take an 6-4 lead. Cosentino started the rally with a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a single by junior Joey Bartosic. Sophomore Mark Osis followed later with a RBI single to make the score 4-3. Junior Kevin Mahala tied the score with a RBI double and then Campbell connected on a two-run single to put the Colonials ahead, 6-4.
GW's bullpen went to work, limiting the Buccaneers to just one hit over the next three innings.
GW plated a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh on RBI doubles by both Mahala and Campbell, giving the Colonials an 8-4 lead.
The Colonials added insurance runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, junior Eli Kashi provided an RBI single. Charleston Southern scored once in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 9-5, but the Colonials took advantage of a fielding error to score again in the ninth, extending the lead to 10-5.
Sophomore Chance Malek earned the win for the Colonials with 1.1 innings of shutout relief. He allowed just one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Justin Friedman followed by allowing just one run on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts across 2.2 innings of work. Junior Eddie Muhl earned his fifth save of the season with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief down the stretch.
Junior Bobby LeWarne was the hard-luck loser for the Colonials in the first game, after allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts.
The Buccaneers scored an unearned run on a passed ball in the bottom of the third, but a RBI single by sophomore Robbie Metz in the fifth knotted the score at 1-1. Charleston Southern pulled ahead with one run on three hits in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh. The Colonials were limited to just one hit across the final four innings.
The Colonials and Buccaneers will play the rubber match on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
