WASHINGTON -- Graduate student Lauren Chase posted her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 assists and sophomore Brianna Cummings scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half as the George Washington women's basketball team won its 14th straight game, an 89-80 triumph over Atlantic 10 rival Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
GW improves to 19-3 on the season and remains perfect in A-10 play at 9-0. The Colonials extended their winning streak to 14 games dating to Dec. 6 while snapping Saint Louis' seven-game streak. The Billikens fall to 17-5 overall and 7-2 in A-10 play.
Chase registered her fourth career double-double but her first in two seasons as a Colonial with a team-high 19 points and 10 assists against just one turnover. Cummings poured in 18 points on 7-of-11 from the field off the bench and added six rebounds and two steals. Junior Caira Washington also notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Shannon Cranshaw scored 14 points on 3-of-4 from long distance, making her 8-for-11 from 3-point range over her last two games.
Sophomore Kelli Prange equaled Washington with a game-high 10 rebounds as GW won the battle of the boards for the 22nd straight game, outrebounding Saint Louis, 41-36. Prange added seven points and a career-best four blocks, while senior Dalacy Anderson scored all eight of her points in the first half, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.
The Colonials shot 47.1 percent in the game, including 56.3 percent (18-32) in the second half, and held a 23-11 edge in points off turnovers, forcing 18 SLU miscues while matching a season-high with 11 steals.
The lead changed hands seven times in the first quarter before a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by Chase and back-to-back treys by Anderson ignited a 15-2 GW run as the Colonials seized a 24-15 advantage after one quarter. The Billikens battled back with a 21-15 second period, cutting GW's lead to three, 39-36, at the break.
Saint Louis jumped ahead on a layup by Jamesia Price at the 7:53 mark of the third period, but Cranshaw answered with her second 3-pointer of the game 12 seconds later and freshman Mei-Lyn Bautista followed with another triple as the Colonials, who were 8-of-18 from deep, regained the lead for good. With GW ahead by three midway through the fourth, Cummings scored eight straight points over a stretch of 1:35 to give the Colonials a double-digit lead.
Sadie Stipanovich paced the Billikens with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Aaliyah Covington scored 15 points with three 3-pointers off the bench and Jackie Kemph added 14 points and eight assists.
