WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team fell in a doubleheader to William & Mary on Thursday evening at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park. The Tribe took the first game, 8-2, before defeating the Colonials in the nightcap, 2-1.
GW (29-20) will conclude the regular season by celebrating Senior Day on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. with a ceremony honoring seniors Craig LeJeune, Xavier Parkmond, Brookes Townsend and Ryan Xepoleas beginning at approximately 11:45 a.m.
William & Mary (22-27) hit a pair of home runs to build a 3-0 in the first inning of game one, then used a second-inning grand slam to extend the lead to 7-0. The Tribe also scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning.
Freshman Chance Malek provided three innings of scoreless relief to keep the Tribe at bay, but the Colonials' bats were unable to erase the deficit.
GW did break through for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Three consecutive singles by sophomores Colin Gibbons-Fly and Kevin Mahala and freshman Mark Osis loaded the bases with no outs. GW's first run scored on a double-play ball, while the second crossed the plate on an infield single by sophomore Joey Bartosic.
GW took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two, scoring on an RBI groundout by freshman Robbie Metz.
Junior Jacob Williams started the nightcap and allowed one run over three innings as the Tribe tied the game in the top of the third.
Junior Luke Olson entered in relief and pitched four shutout innings before running into trouble in the top of the eighth. He was lifted with two runners on, one of which eventually scored to give William & Mary the decisive 2-1 advantage.
Gibbons-Fly collected three hits over the two games to lead the Colonials.
