FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Washington baseball team jumped ahead 3-0 on George Mason and held off a rally in the later innings to win game one of its Revolutionary Rivalry series, 5-4, on Friday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Junior Bobby LeWarne earned his team-leading seventh win of the season as GW (25-12, 11-4 A-10) won its third straight game and for the 15th time in its last 19 games. LeWarne pitched seven innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
The Colonials jumped ahead with three runs in the top of fourth inning. Freshman Robbie Metz hit a one-out double and then scored on an RBI double by sophomore Bobby Campbell to give GW a 1-0 lead. The next batter was freshman Brandon Chapman, who swatted the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field for his first career home run to put the Colonials on top, 3-0.
George Mason (16-22-1, 5-8 A-10) pulled within one run of the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Colonials retaliated with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.
Senior Ryan Xepoleas battled back from an 0-2 hole to draw a one-out walk and then scored on an RBI double by sophomore Kevin Mahala. Sophomore Andrew Selby was up next and roped an RBI double down the right field line to put the Colonials ahead, 5-2.
The Patriots pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh, but ran into the Colonials' lights-out bullpen in the final two innings and were unable to complete the comeback.
Senior Craig LeJeune pitched a scoreless eighth, stranding a runner on third base after an error earlier in the inning.
Sophomore Eddie Muhl pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his NCAA-leading 15th save of the season. He needs just one save to tie Bryan Beggs for the GW career saves record of 17.
GW and George Mason will play game two on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Colonials can clinch the Revolutionary Rivalry trophy for GW Athletics with a win on Saturday.
