TOWSON, Md. - The George Washington baseball team scored six runs over the final two innings to erase a 4-2 deficit and defeat Towson, 8-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
GW (24-12) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore Joey Bartosic led off the game with a base hit, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and then scored on a RBI groundout by sophomore Andrew Selby.
Sophomore Eli Kashi gave the Colonials a 2-0 lead when he hit his first career home run, a solo shot over the right field wall, to lead off the third inning.
Towson (11-26-2) scored single runs in the third and fourth innings before pushing two runs across in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Colonials responded to tie the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the eighth inning.
Kashi led off the eighth with a walk and then advanced to second on a single by Bartosic. A fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt attempt prevented Kashi from reaching third base but a RBI single by sophomore pinch hitter Colin Gibbons-Fly scored Bartosic from second and cut the deficit to 4-3.
GW then successfully converted a double steal which scored sophomore Matt Cosentino from third base and tied the game at 4-4.
Junior Randy Dalrymple pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the sixth and seventh while junior Luke Olson worked a scoreless eighth inning to get the game to the ninth.
The Colonials seized the lead in the ninth on a sequence that started with sophomore Cody Bryant being hit by a pitch to lead off. Freshman pinch runner Mark Osis stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a RBI single by Kashi, putting GW on top, 5-4.
A double steal put runners on second and third before Bartosic singled up the middle, driving in two, to extend the lead to 7-4.
Bartosic then stole second and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a RBI single by Cosentino to push the advantage to 8-4.
Olson returned and pitched a scoreless ninth inning to clinch the victory and his second win of the season.
Kashi finished 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs and two RBIs while Bartosic was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs.
Cosentino (2-for-5, one double, one run, one RBI), Gibbons-Fly (2-for-2, one RBI) and Bryant (2-for-3) also finished with multiple hits as the Colonials won for the 14th time in their last 18 games.
GW will open a three-game Atlantic 10 series at George Mason on Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The winner of the series will earn a point in the Revolutionary Rivalry standings, which the Colonials currently lead by a score of 9.5-5.5
