CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The eighth-seeded George Washington women's tennis squad defeated No. 9 George Mason, 4-1, to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship held at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Colonials (5-12) battled for the early doubles point but came out on top, securing the lead with victories by sophomores Allison Hansen and Taylor Nederlander at the top spot, 8-4, and sophomore Grace Egger and freshman Teodora Radosavljevic at the No. 3 position, 8-7 (5), over Revolutionary Rival George Mason (16-8).
"We felt we had our best three doubles teams out there after experimenting a lot this year," said Head Coach Greg Munoz. "The No. 1 team played great - they really put it together today - winning decisively, 8-4. The Nos. 2 and 3 teams both battled into tie breakers, and No. 3 pulled out the win after their opponents changed their strategy and came back from being down. We stayed mentally tough and got the doubles point to give us some cushion and a great feeling going into singles."
In singles action, the Buff and Blue snagged a trio of straight-set victories to clinch the match, beginning with freshman Marie-Louise Decamps in third-flight action. Decamps took the first set, 6-3, before making quick work of the Patriots' Marike Boers in the second set, 6-1, to give GW a 2-0 advantage.
Mason cut the lead in half with a, 6-4, 6-3, win at the No. 4 position, but would not earn another point on the day.
Nederlander won her first set, 7-5, at the bottom of the ladder before posting a dominant 6-1 second set to take the match and put the Colonials one point from victory.
Junior Lana Robins and Radosavljevic both held 5-4 leads after winning their first sets at the Nos. 2 and 1 positions, respectively, but Radosavljevic finished her match first to clinch the triumph for the Buff and Blue.
"We've struggled with our health all year, but we toughed it out today," said Munoz. "Taylor's win was great; the wins have to come from different people all the time and this was a great team victory for us."
With the win, GW earns a point in the year-long Revolutionary Rivalry and increased its lead to 8.5-5.5 over the Patriots.
The Colonials will take on top-seeded and two-time defending champion VCU on Friday morning at 10 a.m. in the quarterfinal round at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
