GW Baseball Splits A-10 Opener at Saint Joseph's

MERION STATION, Pa. - The George Washington baseball team opened its Atlantic 10 schedule with a doubleheader split against Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at Smithson Field.
GW (10-7, 1-1 A-10) won the first game of the twinbill, 2-1, before falling in the nightcap, 6-0.
Freshman Robbie Metz turned in another solid start in game one, limiting Saint Joseph's (7-10, 1-1 A-10) to one run on six hits in 5.1 innings of work. Metz struck out three batters on the day while issuing two walks.
The Colonials seized a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Metz reached on a one-out fielder's choice, advanced to second on a single by sophomore Bobby Campbell and then scored on an RBI single by sophomore Andrew Selby.
Metz avoided trouble in the bottom of the second when he escaped a two-on, one-out jam by inducing a double play. In the fifth inning, he halted a Hawks rally by erasing another two-on, one-out situation.
Saint Joseph's chased Metz from the game by tying the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Brady Renner entered in relief with two on and one out and worked out of the jam to limit the damage.
Renner pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief before turning the ball over to senior Craig LeJeune in the seventh.
The Colonials scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning. Metz hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a base hit by Campbell and then scored on an RBI single by Selby.
LeJeune worked a scoreless eighth to earn the win and sophomore Eddie Muhl earned his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
Saint Joseph's earned the doubleheader split with a 6-0 win in game two. Junior Bobby LeWarne took the loss for the Colonials after allowing five runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.
GW returns to action on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference game at Coppin State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
