NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The George Washington baseball team rallied from a two-run deficit by scoring three runs in the sixth inning en route to a 3-2 victory over CSUN on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field.
Junior Shane Kemp earned the win for the Colonials after allowing two earned runs over six innings of work. He scattered four hits with two walks and five strikeouts to pick up his second win of the season.
Kemp danced around trouble in the top of the first inning when he stranded a leadoff double on third base. He also worked out of a jam in the fourth inning when he stranded a leadoff single on third.
CSUN (13-5) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Justin Toerner hit a two-out triple after Kemp's intentional walk put runners on first and second with two outs.
GW (8-5) seized the lead in the next half inning, plating three runs to take a 3-2 lead.
Sophomore Eli Kashi started the rally with a one-out single and advanced to second when sophomore Joey Bartosic followed with a base hit through the right side of the infield. After a groundout, sophomore Bobby Campbell sent a base hit through the left side of the infield to drive in both Kashi and Bartosic, tying the score at 2-2.
Sophomore Colin Gibbons-Fly was the next batter up and sent a RBI single to left field to score Campbell, putting the Colonials on top, 3-2.
Senior Craig LeJeune emerged from the bullpen to start the seventh inning and pitched two perfect innings, retiring the six batters he faced in order with one strikeout.
Sophomore Eddie Muhl worked a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.
Campbell finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs while Gibbons-Fly was 1-for-4 with one RBI in the win.
GW and CSUN will play the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Matador Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast live on gwradio.com
