WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer team was edged at District rival Georgetown, 1-0, in an overtime heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field.
After a scoreless draw through 90 minutes of play, GW (5-1-0) and Georgetown (4-2-2) entered the extra period, but the host Hoyas scored the golden goal in the 96th minute to narrowly defeat the Colonials and hand them their first loss of the season. It was the first overtime contest between the nearby foes in 11 meetings.
GW put up a solid defensive presence, staving off 20 of Georgetown's shots, including 14 attempts in the first period, and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn made a career-high six saves between the posts for the Colonials. The Buff and Blue recorded nine shots overall; sophomore MacKenzie Cowley fired a team-high three shots and junior Kyla Ridley tallied two.
GW and Georgetown battled through more than 95 minutes of scoreless action when the Hoyas found the back of the net at 95:56 to secure the win. GU's Marina Paul sent a long pass to Audra Ayotte, who flicked the ball to Crystal Thomas, and when Horn popped out of the goal, Thomas buried a shot from the left side for the game-winning tally.
It marked the second overtime contest of the season for the Colonials, who are off to their best start in program history.
GW continues its three-game road swing when it travels to Philadelphia on Friday, Sept. 19 for a 6 p.m. match at Drexel.
