PHILADELPHIA - The George Washington women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Drexel on Friday evening at the Dragons' Vidas Field.
Drexel (2-5-1) and GW (5-2-0) recorded 13 and 11 shots, respectively, but the Colonials could not overcome a goal in each half by the Dragons as they dropped their second contest of the season. Sophomore MacKenzie Cowley took a team-high three shots for GW and senior Meg Murphy and rookie Lida Koskina each added two attempts.
The Colonials fired four of the first six shots of the match, including two from Cowley, but all of their attempts were thwarted by the Drexel defense. The Dragons got on the scoreboard in the 27th minute following a GW foul inside the box. Drexel's Megan Hammaker fired a penalty shot, which was stopped by Colonials' redshirt freshman goalkeeper Miranda Horn, but Hammaker collected the rebound and buried the ball in the right side of the net to give the Dragons the lead.
The squads took the 1-0 score into the halftime break, and traded shots throughout the second period before Drexel tallied the insurance goal at the 82:43 mark. Hammaker set up a corner kick and Madison Dunn connected with Melissa Champman, who put the ball in the left side of the goal.
GW outshot Drexel, 5-4, in the second frame, and Horn set aside five shots between the posts on the day.
GW concludes non-conference road play with a 1 p.m. match at Delaware State on Sunday afternoon.
