ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally from a 2-0 deficit and defeat UMass, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park to even the series at one game apiece.
Sophomore Jacob Williams earned his team-leading fourth win of the season by allowing two earned runs on eight hits in eight innings of work. Senior Colin Milon worked a scoreless ninth inning for his sixth save of the year.
Massachusetts (8-21, 6-8 A-10) used a pair of sacrifice flies in the fourth and eighth innings to carry a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth before GW (12-23, 5-9 A-10) rallied for the victory.
Freshman Kevin Mahala led off the bottom of the eighth with a four-pitch walk and advanced to second on a one-out single by freshman Joey Barosic. Sophomore Gabe Scott followed with an infield single to load the bases, which chased Minutemen starter Aaron Plunkett from the game.
Freshmen Bobby Campbell then came to the plate and laced a 1-0 pitch up the middle for a two-run single, scoring Bartosic and Mahala, and tying the game at 2-2.
An infield bunt single by senior Owen Beightol loaded the bases once again and junior Ryan Xepoleas followed by driving a 2-2 pitch through the left side of the infield for a RBI single, giving GW a 3-2 lead.
Milon allowed a leadoff single to start the ninth but stranded the runner on third base after recording three straight outs to nail down the win for the Colonials.
Campbell finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Xepoleas finished 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 consecutive games while Beightol was 1-for-4 and has now hit safely in seven straight games.
Sophomore Bobby LeWarne takes the mound Sunday's rubber match. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Barcroft Park.
