GW Baseball Falls to Charlotte, 9-5, in Series Opener

ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team fell in a quick 4-0 hole and was unable to recover, falling to visiting Charlotte, 9-5, on Friday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
Sophomore Owen Beightol led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run over the left field wall, his third of the year, to get the Colonials on the board. Later in the inning, senior Brett Bowers delivered a sacrifice fly to pull the Colonials within three runs of the lead at 5-2.
The 49ers added two runs in the top of fourth to extend the lead to 7-2 before the Colonials got a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Kyle Gelling led off by reaching on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Senior Ollie Mittag then poked a single through the left side of the infield to cut the deficit to 7-3.
GW attempted a late rally in the ninth by scoring two runs. A RBI double by junior Tyler McCarthy and a sacrifice fly by junior Ryan Hickey made the score 9-5, but Charlotte relief pitcher John Hamilton was able to retire the side to clinch the win.
Andrew Smith earned the win after allowing three runs (two earned) in seven innings of work.
