WASHINGTON, DC - Junior Tara Booker recorded a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double and sophomore Danni Jackson added 16 points to lead the George Washington women's basketball team to its third win in four games with a 62-46 victory over Massachusetts at Charles E. Smith Center Saturday afternoon.
Booker made four 3-pointers en route to her team-leading fourth double-double of the season, and Jackson was a perfect 7-of-7 at the foul line and chipped in six assists, four steals and just one turnover in 37 minutes to lead GW (8-16, 3-7 A-10).
Redshirt senior Ivy Abiona also reached double figures with 10 points and junior Sara Mostafa pitched in eight points off the bench to help the Colonials improve to 20-0 all-time against the Minutewomen at Smith Center.
In front of 1,079 pink-clad fans for the fourth annual WBCA Pink Zone promotion to raise awareness for breast cancer research, GW jumped out to a halftime lead for the fourth straight game and withstood Massachusetts' (6-20, 2-9 A-10) advances in the second half to assure a winning home record this season.
Booker hit two of her four 3-pointers during an 11-0 run that helped the Colonials to a double-digit lead, 15-5, just over seven minutes into the game. She added her third triple of the period with 2:57 left before halftime to give the Colonials their largest lead at 29-13. Shakia Robinson scored four points and Cerie Mosgrove hit a three-pointer to help the Minutewomen close within 31-20 at intermission.
Robinson scored 10 of her team-high 14 points in the first half and Mosgrove netted eight of her 13 in the opening period.
GW's lead hovered in double figures until back-to-back three pointers from Megan Zullo and Emilie Teuscher pulled UMass within 47-41 with 7:41 remaining.
Jackson assisted Brooke Wilson's short jumper, then hit her only three-pointer of the game to push the margin back to double digits at 52-41 and the Colonials allowed only one field goal the rest of the way.
GW finished 16-of-20 at the foul line, including 8-of-11 in the final four minutes to help clinch the victory. The Colonials shot 41.7 percent (20-48) and improved to 8-2 on the season when allowing less than 60 points.
UM, which entered the game averaging 63.5 points on 40.8 percent shooting, shot just 30.2 percent (16-53) en route to a season-low 46 points.
The victory moves GW into 10th place in the Atlantic 10 standings with four league games remaining. The Colonials, who are 7-4 at home this season, host league unbeaten Temple (19-6, 10-0 A-10) at Smith Center Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
