WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's basketball team scored the opening basket, but Atlantic 10 unbeaten Temple scored 28 unanswered points and coasted to its 13th straight victory by handing the Colonials an 89-36 loss at Charles E. Smith Center Wednesday evening.
GW (8-17, 3-8 A-10) committed a season-high 26 turnovers, which led to a commanding 43-4 edge in points off turnovers for Temple (20-6, 11-0 A-10). The Colonials are currently tied for 10th in the A-10 standings with three regular-season games remaining.
Sophomore Danni Jackson was the lone Colonials player to reach double figures with 10 points on 5-of-14 shooting. Senior Ivy Abiona finished with eight points and game-high six rebounds.
Sophomore Brooke Wilson gave GW a 2-0 lead 17 seconds in, but the hosts wouldn't make another basket until the 10:06 mark as Temple built a 31-6 advantage. The Owls made 11-of-15 field goals during the 31-2 run, while the Colonials missed all six of their shots and turned the ball over 11 times.
Junior leading scorer Tara Booker made a three-pointer - her only field goal of the game - to make it 40-16 with 3:55 left in the half.
That's as close as GW would get the rest of the night as the Owls, despite missing 13 of their final 19 shots of the first half, still owned a 52-22 advantage at halftime on 17-of-34 shooting.
Abiona made four of GW's six field goals in the second half, her final basket cutting the deficit to 70-32 with 12:30 remaining. The Colonials were held without a field goal over the next 10:33 and the Owls scored 17 consecutive points during a 19-2 spurt to grab their largest lead at 89-35.
The Owls had six players reach double digits, led by Qwedia Wallace's 18 points. Shey Peddy added 16 points, Kristen McCarthy and Victoria Macaulay netted 14 apiece, and BJ Williams and Marli Bennett chipped in 11 and 10 off the bench, respectively.
Peddy also handed out nine of Temple's season-high tying 26 assists as the Owls assisted on all but five of their 31 field goals. TU finished 31-of-64 from the floor, including 10-of-27 from three-point range, and made 17-of-20 free throws.
GW plays its next two games on the road, beginning with a visit to Richmond (15-10, 6-5 A-10) Saturday at 2:00 pm.
