FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior Julia Weir finished in ninth place out of 73 runners to pace the George Washington women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the George Mason Invitational at Oatlands Plantation.
The Colonials finished in sixth place ahead of Howard and the University of the District of Columbia. George Mason won the event followed by Wayne State, St. Francis (Pa.), James Madison and UNC Wilmington.
Weir navigated the 6K course in 23:53 while averaging 6:25 per mile to lead the Colonials. The ninth-place finish stands as her best individual performance in her collegiate career.
A pair of freshmen were next across the finish line for the Colonials. Both Kathryn Luker and Paige Peltan finished with the identical time of 25:17, good enough for 32nd and 33rd place, respectively.
Junior Heather Stevens followed in 25:31 to take 39th place. Freshmen Jenlain Coyle (46th, 26:12), Erica Halvorson (47th 26:34) and Aubrey Gunnels (56th, 28:54) rounded out the field for the Colonials.
On the men's side, sophomore Jackson Carnes was the top performer out of four GW harriers, finishing in 23rd place out of total runners. Carnes finished the 8K course in 27:10.
Freshman Marco Siragusa followed in 56th place in 28:51 while freshman John Perrino (62nd, 29:56) and senior Scott Garrett (57th, 30:10) rounded out the field for the Colonials. GW did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score.
The men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Oct. 15 at the Leopard Invitational in Easton, Pa.
