Colonials Blow Ninth Inning Lead, Lose 7-6 at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington University baseball team gave up two ninth inning runs on Sunday afternoon and dropped a 7-6 decision at Skip Wilson Field on the campus of Temple University. The Colonials fought back by scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning but couldn't hold onto a one-run lead in dropping the series to the Owls.
The Colonials were led on offense by sophomore Ryan Thomas, who went 2-3 with a walk and scored a run on the afternoon. Junior Brendon Kelliher went 2-4 on the afternoon and drove in a pair of runs and senior Tom Zebroski recorded the other multi-hit game for the Colonials in going 2-5.
Freshman Brian Derner got his first weekend start of the season and went 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven in the no decision. The Alexandria, VA native allowed five earned runs and allowed five hits. Junior Joe Richardson came on in a relief and threw 2 1/3 shutout innings and freshman Kenny O'Brien continued his impressive weekend by throwing a shutout inning. Junior Tommy Gaely got the loss dropping him to 0-3 on the season after allowing the two earned runs in the ninth inning.
The teams traded runs in the early going as the Colonials and Owls each scored in the first inning and George Washington took the lead with a second inning run to lead 2-1 after two complete. The Colonials scored in their third straight inning to start the game to take a 3-1 lead, but the Owls knotted the score at three when they scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the third.
The Owls took a 5-3 lead with two runs of their own in the fifth inning, but the Colonials scored three unanswered runs to take 6-5 lead heading into the ninth inning. With the loss the Colonials now find themselves in a three-way tie for fourth place in the A-10 conference with a 12-9 record.
The Colonials will return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Towson and take on the Tigers in a 3:00 p.m. contest. The Colonials have not named a starter for the game.
