Colonials Bounce Back, Win 14-5 Against Owls

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington University baseball team bounced back after a lopsided loss Friday afternoon and beat Temple 14-5 at Skip Wilson Field. Junior Eric Cantrell was the stopped for the Colonials, throwing eight innings and struck out 10 batters in improving to 8-2 on the season. The Colonials now stand at 12-8 on the season in A-10 conference play and is currently a half-game out of second play behind Rhode Island.
The Colonials were led on offense by junior Brendon Kelliher, who hit his 10th home run of the season and drove in three runs on the day. The Sandwich, MA native also scored three runs on the day and drew a walk. Senior Tom Zebroski also had went 3-5 on the day and scored two runs from the leadoff spot. Zebroski also not sits tied for first in Colonials baseball history with 198 career runs, tying Mike Bassett who graduated from Foggy Bottom in 2002. Zebroski will be going after a lot of Basset's records in the coming week and is now 11 hits off of Bassett's program record of 290.
Redshirt senior Chris Luick also had three hits, a walk and came around to score three runs on the day. Five other Colonials hitters also had multi-hit games in the 18-hit attack for the George Washington offense. The Colonials also walked six times to go along with a one hit by pitch to produce 25 baserunners on the afternoon.
While the final score ended lopsided in the Colonials favor, the day started off slow as George Washington failed to score in the first four frames of the afternoon and trailed 4-0 going into the top of the fifth. The bats got going for the rest of the afternoon as the George Washington offense scored three in the fifth and six runs in the sixth to suddenly lead 9-4 after six complete. After the Owls scored a run in the seventh, George Washington buried Temple with four runs in the eighth inning and another in the ninth to finish the game with the 14-5 score.
The Colonials will now look to win the series against the Owls in the series finale at Skip Wilson Field on Sunday, May 9th. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and the Colonials will send junior Joe Richardson to the mound.
