11-Run Eighth Inning Buries Colonials

TOWSON, MD - The George Washington University baseball team carried a lead into the eighth inning Wednesday afternoon in Towson, MD, but couldn't stop the bleeding in the frame in a 17-8 loss. The Colonials led 8-6 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Tigers scored 11 runs in the bottom of the eighth to send the Colonials to their fifth loss in six games.
The Colonials were led once again by senior Tom Zebroski, who went 2-3 with a walk and is now the program career run leader with 202 runs in his George Washington career. The senior from Port Washington, NY also hit his 13th home run of the season which is the highest on the team.
Junior Brendon Kelliher also hit his 12th home run on the season and scored a pair of runs and freshman Tyler McCarthy went 2-4, driving in three runs and scoring a pair of his own. Redshirt senior Chris Luick recorded the other multi-hit game for the Colonials, going 2-3 with a walk on the afternoon.
Freshman Justin Albright got the start for the Colonials and went three innings, allowing five hits and allowed one earned run. The freshman right-hander struck out two and didn't factor in the decision. The Colonials all told sent seven pitchers to the mound against the Tigers.
The game started promising for the Colonials as they scored five second-inning runs to take a 5-1 lead quickly after two innings. The teams traded runs in the fourth inning and the Colonials added to the lead with two runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead. The Tigers fought back for three in their half of the fifth inning and added a run in the sixth before the deciding eighth inning. The Tigers sent 16 batters to the plate in the frame and the big blow was a grand slam by Nick Natoli, who had three hits on the day.
The Colonials will now look regroup over the weekend when they host the Fordham Rams in a crucial A-10 matchup with A-10 conference tournament implications. The Colonials are currently in a tie for third place with a 12-9 conference record and the Rams are right behind with an 11-10 A-10 record. The series opener is set for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch with senior Ryan Lapointe getting the start for the Colonials.
