ARLINGTON, VA - The Colonials returned to action at Barcroft Park on Sunday afternoon, but couldn't breakthrough against the 49ers in an 8-5 loss. The loss drops the Colonials to two games back of the 49ers, but remain in second place with Saint Joseph's with 10-5 conference records.
Junior Joe Richardson got the start for the Colonials and pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs and struck out a 49ers batter. Richardson battled a struggling Colonials defense which committed five errors behind him and a couple balls that took some strange bounces on the Barcroft Park field.
Junior Tommy Gately produced his best outing of the season out of the Colonial bullpen and pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings, striking out one. Gately walked the first batter he faced, but retired the next 11 49ers batters he faced to finish the game. In the process Gately lowered his ERA nearly three full points in lowering it to 4.66 on the year.
The Colonials offense was led by junior Brendon Kelliher, who his 10th home run of the season and drove in two runs. The Sandwich, MA native also scored two runs on the day and drew a walk to lead the offensive attack. Seniors Chris Luick and Tom Zebroski each had multi-hit games and Zebroski also scored a pair of runs. Luick drove in two runs and also drew a walk.
The Colonials now will travel to William and Mary on Wednesday, April 28th for a rare mid-week night game against the Tribe before resuming A-10 conference play against Massachusetts over the weekend. Massachusetts will come into the weekend with a 7-8 conference record and a 10-21 record overall.
