NORFOLK, VA - The George Washington women's basketball team closed within 24-20 just over two minutes into the second half, but Old Dominion used a 27-9 run to build a 22-point lead and defeat the Colonials, 60-35, at Ted Constant Convocation Center Wednesday evening.
Despite holding ODU's leading scorer Jasmine Parker to 1-of-7 shooting and six points - 10 below her season average - GW struggled to find any rhythm offensively and was dominated around the basket and in transition. The Lady Monarchs held a 33-20 edge in points in the paint and outscored the Colonials, 15-0, on the fast break.
GW (4-4) shot a season worst 26 percent, including 10 points on 4-of-23 shooting from its starting five, en route to a season-low 35 points in losing for just the second time in its last six games.
The Colonials posted their worst half of the season with just 13 points on 21.7 percent shooting in the first period, but managed to trail by only nine at intermission, 22-13. Junior Kye Allums kept GW close with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting off the bench in the first half.
After scoring 50 points over the final 20 minutes to erase a 13-point halftime deficit in Sunday's victory over George Mason, GW appeared to find similar success to begin the second half Wednesday.
Redshirt sophomore Brooke Wilson made a layup and three-pointer and sophomore Danni Jackson converted a putback in consecutive possessions to prompt a Lady Monarchs' timeout and pull the Colonials to within four, 24-20, with 17:51 remaining.
Jackson missed a jumper that would have made it a one-possession game and GW went on to finish 5-of-23 from the field the remainder of the half as ODU surged ahead.
A 12-6 run put ODU ahead by double figures and the margin eventually ballooned to 22 points with the 27-9 spurt that made it 51-29 with 6:34 to play.
Tia Lewis led all players with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double for Old Dominion (4-3), which snapped a two-game slide. JoNiquia Guilford also reached double digits with 13 points.
Wilson and Allums both scored nine points to lead GW, which committed a season-high 22 turnovers that led to 18 points for ODU. Wilson also grabbed eight rebounds, while redshirt senior Ivy Abiona snared nine to pace the Colonials.
GW returns home to Charles E. Smith Center Saturday to host Stony Brook for Kids Day and Autograph Day. Tip-off is schedule for 2:00 pm.
