WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington cross country's Megan Hogan (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Central Catholic) capped a record-setting season by finishing in the Top 30 in the United States in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs.
Hogan, who will enter the 2009-10 season as a redshirt junior, ranked 25th nationally in the outdoor 10,000-meter run prior to last week's USA Track and Field National Championship meet in Eugene, OR. Hogan captured the 10,000 at this past spring's Penn Relays in 33:55.23, just .23 seconds shy of the `B' qualifying standard for the national meet. She is the first GW athlete to win an event at the Penn Relays.
Hogan also ranked 28th in the nation in the indoor 5,000-meter run with her time of 16:23.23 at the 2009 ECAC Championship in March. Hogan finished fourth in that race to earn All-East honors.
In just her first season of competitive running after transferring to GW from Mount Ida College (MA), Hogan posted the finest season in program history, becoming the first Colonial to qualify for the NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championship and posting record finishes at the Atlantic 10 Championship (runner-up) and NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals (19th).
"Megan's rise to one of the top ranked runners in the country is nothing short of remarkable," said GW cross country head coach Brian Beil. "What started as a promising cross country season in 2008 quickly grew into a year in which Megan shattered school records, won major invitational meets and competed with the best distance runners in America. I'm proud of her accomplishments and look forward to seeing her hard work pay off next season."
