Softball Outlasts Temple in 14-Inning Duel

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington softball ties a school record 14-inning game to defeat Temple, 2-1, in GW's home opener in Atlantic 10 Conference play Friday, at Mount Vernon Softball Field.
Junior Elisa Van Kirk led all batters with three hits, the biggest coming in the bottom of the 14th inning to score the tying and winning runs for the Colonials.
Freshman Krissy Mackiewicz beat out a dribbler down the first base line to get on with one out in the bottom of the 14th. After senior Tori Sensi flied out to center field, junior Katie Terrazas drew a five-pitch walk.
During Van Kirk's at bat, Temple starting pitcher Katie Burdeeaux threw a wild pitch to allow both runners to advance. Van Kirk then hit a one into the gap in center field to score both runs.
Junior starting pitcher Amanda Gabriel went all 14 innings for the Colonials (11-19, 2-3 A-10), striking out a GW record 16 opposing batters. The previous record was held by Elana Myers, who struck out 14 La Salle batters in the 2003 season.
The Colonials and Temple face-off again Saturday, at 12:00 p.m., at the Mount Vernon Softball Field, for the second of two Conference games.
