George Washington Fall Late To Rams, 11-7

ARLINGTON, VA - The George Washington University baseball team lost a tough game on Friday afternoon at Barcroft Park, when their own eighth inning rally fell short as they allowed six ninth inning runs an 11-7 defeat. Sophomore Eric Cantrell got the start for the Colonials and threw seven innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out four.
The Rams held a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning when senior Gavin Swanson tied the game with a blast over the center field wall. This score lasted until the eighth inning when the Rams got a solo home run by Rob DeVeney to take a 5-4 lead. It appeared that lead would last through the inning, but Chris Holland stroked a two-out single to right field to tie the score at five. Junior Sean Rockey followed with a two-run opposite field home run to give the Colonials the lead at 7-5.
The Colonials couldn't close the door in the ninth, when four relievers combined to allow six runs to give the Rams the victory. Junior Tom Zebroski once again led the offense with two hits and walk, and was one of the three Colonials along with Rockey and senior Tim Reeves to finish with multi-hit games.
The Rams were led by Rob DeVeney, who had three hits and finished a single short of the cycle.
These two teams will return to the field tomorrow at Barcroft Park for the second game of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m and left-hander Chris Neary is the scheduled starter for the Colonials.
