KITTY HAWK, NC -- George Washington's Cole Turner tied the school record with a second-round 66 on Tuesday en route to a two-round 141 at the 30th ODU/Seascape Collegiate tournament played on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Turner tied Delaware's Greg Matthias for third place in the 73-player field at the par-70, 6,131-yard Seascape Golf Links. The Colonials placed second, just four strokes off the pace set by host Old Dominion, in the 14-team field and ahead of two other A-10 teams. It marked GW's highest finish in the event since it tied for second at the 2005 ODU/Seascape. GW totalled a two-round 588 (300-288).
"I'm real proud of our team today and Cole in particular," GW head coach Terry Shaffer said. "It was a nice way to finish the Fall portion of the season. Now we'll get into weight training and prepare for the Spring matches as we look to improve our finish at the A-10 Championship."
Turner, who carded five birdies and a bogey Tuesday, said putting was the key to his low round. "I had just 25 putts today, my lowest total of the season. The conditions were a little better today with lighter winds after a foggy and misty start this morning. It's my personal best and I'm excited," Turner said. The 66 tied the GW record for lowest 18-hole score accomplished four other times, most recenty by Andrew Gallo in 2004. Turner finished with a total of seven birdies and 23 pars over the 36 holes.
The host Monarchs of Old Dominion won the tournament with a 584 (298-286). ODU's Eric Onesi won medalist honors with a four-under 136 (69-67), two strokes ahead of runner-up Nick MacDonald (73-65--138) of Hartford.
GW's Martin Liu was the second-lowest Colonial after firing a 147 (73-74) to tie for 13th place, one stroke ahead of teammate Tyler Wendelken whose 148 (75-73) tied for 15th.
The ODU tournament closed out the Fall portion of the 2009-10 schedule. The Colonials resume play in March at the 54-hole Ohio Wesleyan GEICO Intercollegiate on Mar. 11-13 at Savannah, GA.
