Baseball Drops Series Finale at Saint Louis, 11-4

ST. LOUIS, MO - A day after George Washington baseball pounded out 21 runs on 28 hits in the second game of a doubleheader, the Colonials (20-23, 8-10 A-10) managed just six hits and four runs as they lost in the finale of their three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series at Saint Louis, falling to the Billikens (19-23, 6-12 A-10) Sunday afternoon, 11-4.
Three of GW's runs came via the long-ball, getting a solo home run from Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) in the fifth, his sixth of the season, and a two-run shot off the bat of Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) in the eighth, his team-leading ninth homer of the season. Kruer is now in sole possession of sixth place all-time at GW with 35 career home runs.
Saint Louis starting pitcher Dave Sever (3-5) held the hot GW bats in check, limiting them to just six hits over the first eight innings, while striking out nine. His counterpart, GW sophomore Ryan Lapointe (Somersworth, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) suffered the loss (2-3) after allowing seven runs in six innings.
In Sunday's game, Saint Louis took control early with five runs in the bottom of the first inning as the first five batters reached safely, including a Tom Pinnell two-RBI single from the fourth spot. The Billikens added a run in the second when Pinnell delivered again, this time with a double into left-center.
GW fought back with a couple of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Gavin Swanson led-off with a home run to centerfield to end the shutout. Andrew Haberern (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus/Trinity College) reached base on a throwing error made by the Saint Louis shortstop and then eventual scored on a groundout, making it 6-2.
Saint Louis added a run in the fifth with a couple of doubles to extend their lead to 7-2. The Colonials made it a three-run game in the top of eighth, when Andrew Abokhair (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) singled to lead-off the frame, and then was followed by Charlie Kruer, who blasted a two-run home run. The 7-4 score was as close as GW would come in Sunday's game, however, as Saint Louis seized control with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, giving the Billikens an 11-4 victory.
Andrew Abokhair was 3-for-3 with a run in the loss. In the three-game series, Abokhair was 7-for-12 with three RBI. Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) went 6-for-13 with eight RBI.
With the two wins in Saturday's doubleheader, GW claimed its first A-10 Conference series win victory since it took two of three from Richmond, Mar. 28-30.
George Washington returns to action Tuesday, Apr. 29, at MD-Eastern Shore, at 3:00 p.m.
