UMBC Rolls past GW Baseball, 14-4

ARLINGTON, VA - George Washington baseball (14-11) took an early 4-0 lead but then was held hitless after the third inning as they fell to MD-Baltimore County, 14-4, Tuesday afternoon at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. Scott Peddicord hit two home runs and drove in five runs to lead the way for UMBC. The loss was just GW's second in their past seven games.
Sophomore Ryan Lapointe (Somersworth, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) struggled for the second consecutive start and fell to 2-2. LaPointe surrendered nine runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Sterling Sams, in his first appearance of the season, picked up the win for UMBC (7-13) with a scoreless inning of work.
Tuesday's game started well for the Colonials, as they took an early 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, GW drew back-to-back walks to lead-off, putting a runner in scoring position for Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth), who delivered with a single through the right side, plating a run. Two batters later, junior Chris Marsicano (Old Tappan, NJ/Bergen Catholic) drove in a second run when he reached on an infield single. Junior Matt Boyd (Rockville, MD/Marguder) followed with sacrifice bunt to first, allowing Reeves to score, making it 3-0.
GW added a run in the next frame, when the first three batters recorded base-hits, capped with an RBI-single through the left side off the bat of sophomore C Will Cooper (McLean, VA/Gonzaga College HS) to give the Colonials the 4-0 lead. Unfortunately for GW, that was the last hit they would record in Tuesday's contest.
Over the final six innings, UMBC scored 14 unanswered runs. They plated two in the fourth, four in the fifth and three more in the sixth, two of which came on Scott Peddicord's first home run of the game, a shot to right-center. The Retrievers added another run in the seventh and then four more in the eighth, three of which scored when Peddicord hit a three-run blast over the fence right-field.
UMBC finished the game with 16 hits as their first four batters all finished with three hits and at least two runs (12-for-22, six RBI, 10 runs). Reliever Travis Pearson kept the GW bats in check as UMBC mounted their rally, pitching three shutout innings.
George Washington hosts Georgetown (10-16) tomorrow, Apr. 2, at Barcroft Park, at 3:00 p.m. The Colonials lost to the Hoyas on their home field earlier this season (Mar. 18), 10-4.
