Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game at Georgetown, 10-4

ROCKVILLE, MD - George Washington baseball pounded out 10 hits but also left 10 runners on base as they fell to Georgetown, 10-4, in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon in at Shirley Povich Field, in Rockville, MD, the home field of the Hoyas.
With the win, the Hoyas improved to 7-9 on the season while the Colonials dropped to 8-8. GW is now 86-29-1 all-time against their cross town rival.
GU starting pitcher Jimmy Saris (1-2) worked the first five innings and allowed three runs on five hits for the win. GW's Justin Dignelli (Katonah, NY/The Hackley School) was tagged with the loss and is now 0-2. The red-shirt sophomore surrendered five runs and five hits with seven walks in three innings of work.
After a scoreless first, GW got on the board in the top of the second with a pair of runs. Sophomore Chris Holland (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field. Gavin Swanson (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall College HS) followed with a single roped into center that plated Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth), who had previously reached on single of his own.
Georgetown answered with three runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 6-2 lead. In the two frames, the Hoyas had five hits, including a two-run home run off the bat of Erick Fernandez in the third, and took advantage of four walks.
The Colonials scratched together a run in the fifth on another sac-fly, this time courtesy of sophomore Curtis Eward (Oak Hill, VA/Oakton) that allowed Tom Zebroski (Port Washington, NY/Paul Schreiber) to score and cut the lead to 6-3. However, Georgetown quickly responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, in the form of a solo homer into left field, hit by Sean Lamont.
GW continued to fight back with a solo shot of their own in the top of the sixth, as Gavin Swanson crushed a ball deep over the fence in left field, to again cut the lead, 7-4. It was Swanson's first homer of the season, after he finished tied for sixth in the A-10 with nine last year. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Colonials would get on Tuesday.
The Hoyas put the game out of reach with three runs in the seventh. Following a lead-off single, Sean Lamont hit his second homer of the game, a two-run blast to straight-away center field. A single pushed across the 10th and final run of the game for the host-school.
For GW, it marks just their second loss this season when tallying at least 10 hits and oddly enough, dropped their record to 0-5 when they hit one home run. They are 7-2 when they record double-digit hits.
George Washington is on the road again tomorrow, Mar. 19, traveling to play at Mount St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m.
