Charlotte's Adam Mills Holds GW to Just One Hit

ARLINGTON, VA - Charlotte (33-8, 14-2 A-10) starting pitcher Adam Mills faced two more than the minimum and struck out nine batters in a complete game one-hitter as he led the 49ers to a 10-0 win at George Washington (16-25-1, 8-8 A-10) Friday evening at Barcroft Park.
Adam Mills opened the game by surrendering a lead-off bloop-single to GW's Mickey Shupin (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) and then retired 25 straight before allowing a walk to Chris Holland (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) with one out in the ninth inning. In seven consecutive innings, the second through the eighth, he faced the minimum three batters in each frame.
Mills improved to 10-1 on the year.
For GW, this was only the second time this year they have been shutout. They lost 11-0 in their season opener at Virginia (2/17), who ranked No. 8 at the time.
Offensively, the 49ers provided more than enough run support for Mills, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits. Charlotte took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Brad McElroy led-off with a double and later came around to score on Aaron Bray's single into left field.
The 49ers added to their lead in the third inning as they recorded five hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs.
In the top of the sixth, the Niners added four more runs, two of which came on Spencer Steedley's two-run home run, a blast that snuck just inside the right-field foul poll.
GW's starting pitcher, Pat Lehman (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn), worked the first six innings and allowed eight runs, seven earned, while striking out four batters, all looking.
Charlotte added two more runs in the seventh on Alex Burt's single through the left-side to plate the 10th and final run of the game.
The two teams will meet in game two of their three-game series, Saturday, at 1:00 p.m.
Game Notes: Neither team issued a walk until the top of the seventh inning ... all six strikeouts recorded by Colonial pitching was on a called third strike.
